How a product passport works

Three steps from manufacture to verified resale.

Tag

Each product receives a unique on-chain credential at point of manufacture. A tamper-evident NFC tag or QR code is embedded in the item and linked to the token on-chain via tokenization of the physical object into a verifiable on-chain record.

Verify

Any party in the supply chain can scan the tag and verify authenticity against the on-chain record. The credential travels with the product through every ownership transfer, from manufacturer to retailer to consumer to resale buyer.

Resell

When a product is resold, the ownership transfer is recorded on-chain. Royalties flow automatically to the brand via smart contract. The new owner receives a verified passport confirming the product is genuine and the transfer is authentic.

Each product receives a unique on-chain credential at manufacture, linked to a tamper-evident NFC tag. Because the credential is cryptographically signed and stored on a public chain, it cannot be copied or forged without access to the issuing private key. Resellers and buyers can verify any item by scanning the tag and checking the on-chain record across Ethereum, Polygon PoS, Base, Arbitrum One, Optimism, Avalanche C-Chain, Gnosis Chain or Solana. What is phygital?

Phygital describes a product that has both a physical form and a linked on-chain identity. An NFC chip or QR code is embedded in or on the item at manufacture. When a buyer or reseller taps the chip or scans the code with a mobile device, it triggers the digital passport: showing the product's origin, ownership history and authenticity status pulled directly from the chain.

Can you automate royalties on resale?

Yes. When a product's on-chain passport is transferred to a new owner in a resale transaction, the smart contract distributes a royalty payment automatically to the brand. The royalty percentage is set at passport issuance and enforced by the contract without requiring the brand to participate in or even monitor each individual transaction. The royalty logic uses role based smart contracts so only authorised brand administrators can adjust rates or pause distributions. Brands we work with now receive royalty income from secondary markets they previously had no visibility into.

A verifiable on-chain record of a product's identity, origin, attributes and ownership history, tied to the physical item via NFC or QR and readable by any party in the supply chain.
Product authentication
The process of verifying that a product is genuine and matches its claimed identity, here done on-chain so any party can confirm without trusting a central authority.
Phygital
A product that has both a physical form and a linked on-chain identity; an NFC tag or QR code embedded in the item triggers the digital passport when scanned.
Authenticated resale
A secondary market transaction in which the product's on-chain passport is transferred to the new owner, verifying authenticity and recording the change of ownership permanently.
Provenance
The documented history of a product's origin, manufacturing, ownership and custody, stored on-chain so it cannot be altered or forged.
NFC tag
Near Field Communication chip embedded in a product that triggers the digital passport when tapped by a mobile device, linking the physical item to its on-chain record.
Gray market
The trade of genuine products through distribution channels that are unofficial, unauthorised or unsanctioned by the original manufacturer, often undermining brand pricing and warranty programs.
Royalty on resale
A payment automatically distributed to the original brand or creator each time a product is resold, enforced by the smart contract without requiring the brand's involvement in the transaction.
Circular economy
An economic model in which products are designed for reuse, repair and resale rather than disposal, extending product life and reducing waste. On-chain passports facilitate provenance tracking across multiple owners and enable asset tokenization of physical goods so their resale value is captured and distributed transparently.
Ownership transfer
The on-chain event that records a change of product ownership, updating the digital passport so the new owner holds the verified credential and the history is permanently preserved. Ownership transfer in a secure smart contract development context requires key management controls and transaction safety checks to prevent unauthorised reassignment.
